Empowering the Watts Community

Building a Safer Watts

About Us

The Watts Gang Task Force (WGTF) was established in December 2005 to address escalating gang violence in Watts, particularly in Jordan Downs, Nickerson Gardens, and Imperial Courts. Community leaders, activists, clergy, and the LAPD collaborated to broker a ceasefire between rival gangs, laying the foundation for the Task Force. WGTF became a permanent, community-led organization, holding weekly meetings to mediate conflicts, improve communication with police, and prevent violence. Over time, it incorporated former gang members as violence interrupters, influenced the development of the Community Safety Partnership, and evolved into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, combining intervention, community engagement, and preventive programs to reduce gang violence.
